Honduras: Students, Trade Unionists, and Teachers March amidst Crisis at UNAH

Tegucigalpa, Honduras — Scores of students, trade unionists, and teachers of the National Autonomous University of Honduras (UNAH) marched to the National Congress today in protest, due to the current crisis of this university, demanding that it be not closed.

The march was composed of a student group from the University Revolutionary Front (FRU), the Trade Union of Workers (SITRAUNAH), and the Association of Teachers (ADUNAH), rejecting the supposed reforms which will put into effect a new fee plan and demanding the approval of the union’s collective bargaining contract.

For its part, ADUNAH joined the action in solidarity with the trade union and students who are opposed to the supposed reform plan which will raise the tuition costs and fees.

The sanitation authorities decided on Monday to close this leading institution of higher education for ten days, citing the accumulation of trash piling up in its surroundings due to SITRAUNAH’s strike.

Tuesday’s march comes after a month of actions taken by the trade unionists to pressure the highest authorities in order to demand the approval of a new collective bargaining contract.
