This afternoon in the city of Cartagena, Colombia, former Honduran President Manuel Zelaya Rosales and incumbent regime leader Porfirio Lobo met to sign the Cartagena Accord.
Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos, his foreign minister María Angela Holguín, and Venezuelan Foreign Minister Nicolás Maduro added their signatures to this Accord as witnesses of honor.
Last April, Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez and Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos initiated the mediation that today culminated in the signing of the Cartagena Accord.
The signing of this Accord enables the return to Honduras of at least 200 political exiles, including the former president and some of the officials of his administration, and it fulfills one of the requirements that the OAS has set for the reintegration of the Honduran state into this organ of regional integration.
Former President Manuel Zelaya expects to return to his country next Saturday, on the 28th of May.
