28 March, Historic Mobilization against the CPE [28 mars, mobilisation historique contre le CPE]

Bernard Thibault [secretary general of the CGT] set the tone at the beginning of the Parisian demonstration of 700,000 people: “We are nearly 3 million in the streets today [on 28 March 2006] — it is historic.  It is inconceivable that the Prime Minister remains entrenched in his position.  It is up to him and the government to decide the next step.  For us, there is only one end to this: the withdrawal of this reform.”

There were 100,000 demonstrators in Bordeaux, 17,000 in Strasbourg, 48,000 in Clermont-Ferrand, 60,000 in Ille-et-Vilaine, 20,000 in Tours, 33,000 in Limoges, 50,000 in Nancy, 85,000 in Toulouse, 80,000 in Lille (see the table that shows city-by-city participation).

The 12 organizations of workers, college students, and high-school students will meet again this Wednesday [on 29 March 2006] at 2 PM to decide on what the movement will do next.  The five labor union confederations sent a letter to the President of the Republic yesterday [on 27 March 2006] (read the letter).

In addition, many foreign labor unions support the movement against the CPE (read the messages).

68 Universities on Strike

3 Million Demonstrators:
The CPE Must Be Withdrawn!

The demonstrations today [on 28 March] was a phenomenal success.  Indeed, more than 3 million people demonstrated today [on 28 March 2006] in all of France to demand the revocation of the CPE.

The majority of the marches exceeded tens of thousands of people.  Thus there were 700,000 in Paris, 250,000 in Marseilles, 120,000 in Bordeaux, 80,000 in Lille, 70,000 in Nantes, 60,000 in Grenoble and Rennes, 40,000 in Lyon and Pau, 35,000 in Caen, 30,000 in Brest, Avignon, St Etienne. . . .

It’s a matter of historic mobilization.  The tidal wave of demonstrators engulfed the CPE under the floods of protest.

68 Universities on Strike

The government cannot scorn the protest any more.  It must fulfill the demands of a vast majority of the population, which showed it once more that it was isolated in its battle for a CPE that nobody wants.

It is now urgent that a dialogue takes place: Mr. de Villepin must create the conditions for an end to the crisis by withdrawing the CPE.

The UNEF, under the current conditions, will not go to the meeting proposed by the Prime Minister.  The UNEF refuses to take part in a discussion that would consist in amending the CPE.
